Colgate University is accepting first-year applications for 2027 entry and will meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for every admitted international student, including applicants who need a full financial aid package. International admission is need-aware, so requesting aid can affect the admission decision, but admitted aid applicants receive funding calculated to cover their demonstrated need.

Quick facts

  • Host: Colgate University, New York, United States
  • Level: Undergraduate / first-year bachelor’s admission
  • Funding: 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students
  • International application fee: Waived for non-U.S. citizens
  • Early Decision I deadline: November 1, 2026
  • Early Decision II deadline: January 15, 2027
  • Regular Decision deadline: January 15, 2027
  • Deadline time zone: Colgate does not state a cutoff time or time zone on the official pages
  • SAT/ACT: Optional

Colgate publishes the dates without a year on its live application page. Because the page is currently accepting the 2026–27 application cycle, the dates above correspond to fall 2027 entry. Applicants should still confirm the date displayed in their application portal.

What does Colgate financial aid cover?

Colgate states that it meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students. Demonstrated need is not a fixed scholarship amount: the university reviews the CSS Profile and family financial information, estimates what the family can contribute, and builds an individual aid offer for the remaining eligible cost.

An offer may contain grants, loans and work-study. Colgate’s no-loan initiative applies to most families with income up to US$200,000, but the university’s public page does not promise that every international package is grant-only. Applicants should review the exact components of their personal offer before committing.

For cost context, Colgate lists 2026–27 billed charges of US$96,646 for first-year and sophomore students living on campus: US$76,828 tuition, US$9,348 housing, US$10,008 food and a US$462 student activity fee. These figures are not the 2027–28 price and may rise. Aid is based on demonstrated need rather than a universal award equal to this amount.

Who is eligible?

You may apply as an international first-year student if you are a non-U.S. citizen applying from secondary school or after completing secondary school without enrolling full-time in a degree programme. Colgate treats U.S. dual citizens, permanent residents and U.S. citizens living abroad under its domestic applicant rules.

  • You must submit a first-year admission application through the Common Application, Coalition Application on Scoir or QuestBridge.
  • You must indicate on the admission application that you intend to apply for financial aid.
  • You must submit the CSS Profile by the deadline for your application plan.
  • You must demonstrate academic preparation through your secondary-school record and required recommendations.
  • If English is not your native language and English is not the primary language of instruction at your secondary school, you must submit an accepted English test.

Important: International students who do not request or qualify for Colgate need-based aid at admission cannot become eligible for Colgate need-based aid in later years. Request aid from the start if you may need it.

Required application documents

  • Common Application, Coalition Application on Scoir or QuestBridge Application, including the personal statement
  • Official high-school transcript; if it is not in English, both the official original and an official English translation
  • Two recommendations from core academic teachers who taught you in grades 10, 11 or 12
  • Guidance counsellor recommendation
  • Mid-year grades, due February 15 when available
  • Final transcript after completing secondary school
  • Early Decision agreement signed by the student, parent/guardian and counsellor, if applying ED I or ED II
  • CSS Profile for applicants requesting institutional aid
  • Official English-proficiency score where required
  • External national or international examination results, if applicable, sent by the testing agency or a school official

If Colgate selects your aid application for verification, it will request additional documents through the College Board IDOC portal. Do not email sensitive financial documents; Colgate says verification materials must be submitted through IDOC.

English-language and testing rules

SAT and ACT scores are optional, and applicants who do not submit them are not disadvantaged. English testing is separate. Non-native English speakers whose secondary school does not primarily teach in English must send one of these official minimum results:

  • TOEFL iBT: 4.5
  • IELTS: 7
  • Duolingo English Test: 130

Colgate does not waive the English requirement based on SAT performance. Scores must come from the official testing agency; the TOEFL school code is 2086. The TOEFL figure reflects the new score scale shown on Colgate’s current international-applicant page.

Fees and CSS Profile waiver

The standard first-year application fee is US$60, but Colgate automatically waives it for non-U.S. citizens. The CSS Profile normally charges its own fee. International applicants for whom that fee is a significant burden may request a Colgate CSS Profile waiver code through the financial-aid tab of the applicant portal after their admission application has been processed.

Request the CSS waiver by November 1 for Early Decision I or January 15 for Early Decision II and Regular Decision. The international page contains one conflicting line that says January 22, while Colgate’s detailed aid page says January 15; applicants should follow the earlier January 15 date and verify their portal checklist. Colgate does not accept paper or PDF CSS Profiles.

Application deadlines for 2027 entry

Application plan Admission deadline Aid submission deadline Decision
Early Decision I November 1, 2026 November 1, 2026 Mid-December
Early Decision II January 15, 2027 January 15, 2027 Mid-February
Regular Decision January 15, 2027 January 15, 2027 Late March

Early Decision is binding: if admitted, you agree to withdraw other applications and attend Colgate. Regular Decision is non-binding. No official cutoff time or time zone is stated, so submit at least a day early.

How to apply for Colgate financial aid

  1. Choose an application plan. Use ED I only if Colgate is your definite first choice and you understand the binding agreement.
  2. Submit the admission application. Apply through Common App, Coalition on Scoir or QuestBridge and select that you intend to request financial aid.
  3. Complete all school materials. Arrange for your transcript, counsellor recommendation and two teacher recommendations to be sent by school officials.
  4. Send English results if required. TOEFL, IELTS or DET scores must come from the testing agency.
  5. Complete the CSS Profile. Use Colgate code 2086 and submit it by your plan’s aid deadline.
  6. Request a CSS fee waiver if needed. After Colgate processes your application, use the financial-aid tab in the applicant portal before the applicable deadline.
  7. Monitor the portal. Check that every admission and aid item has been received and provide IDOC documents only if requested.
  8. Review the offer carefully. Compare grants, work expectations, loans and the family contribution before accepting admission.

Selection advice

Full demonstrated-need funding is not automatic admission. Colgate says international admission is need-aware and its strongest candidates may be admitted regardless of aid request. Build an academically rigorous application, use the personal statement to provide context and purpose, and choose teacher recommenders who can describe your intellectual engagement. Submit financial information consistently across the application and CSS Profile.

Frequently asked questions

Is Colgate financial aid fully funded?

It can cover the full demonstrated gap between Colgate’s calculated cost and your family’s assessed contribution. It is not a fixed full-ride scholarship for every applicant, and an offer may include grants, work-study or loans.

Can international students receive 100% need-based aid?

Yes. Colgate explicitly says it meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for every admitted student, including international students who require a full financial package.

Is admission need-blind for international students?

No. Colgate is need-aware for all applicants, which means the amount of aid requested can be considered during admission review.

Does Colgate charge international students an application fee?

No. The US$60 fee is waived for non-U.S. citizens. A separate CSS Profile fee may apply, but eligible international applicants can request a waiver through the Colgate portal.

Are SAT or ACT scores required?

No. They are optional. Required English-proficiency testing may still apply based on your native language and secondary-school language of instruction.

Does Colgate offer merit scholarships?

No. Colgate says its institutional financial aid is based on demonstrated financial need, not academic merit.

Must international students reapply for aid every year?

No. Current international students receiving Colgate aid do not reapply annually; eligibility is reviewed from the initial application. Applicants who did not qualify at admission cannot request Colgate need-based aid later.
