What does Smith’s funding cover?

Smith calculates documented need as the difference between its cost-of-attendance budget and the family contribution it determines from financial records. The budget includes tuition, fees, housing and food, plus standard allowances for books, supplies, personal expenses and travel.

Smith grants do not need to be repaid. International students with need-based aid also receive a health grant for Smith’s health-insurance plan. Student employment may appear in the award and represents an opportunity to earn money; earnings that are not earned are not replaced with other aid.

Who can apply?

  • International first-year applicants seeking fall 2027 admission.
  • Applicants who request institutional financial aid before admission and meet the applicable deadline.
  • Applicants eligible under Smith’s admission policy: Smith considers applicants who self-identify as women, including cis, trans and nonbinary women.
  • Students who can provide the CSS Profile and required family-income documentation.

International students who do not apply for aid before admission are not eligible for Smith institutional aid later.

Important cautions

  • The programme meets documented need; it is not an automatic full scholarship for every admitted student.
  • Smith assesses financial circumstances and determines the family contribution.
  • International admission with aid is highly competitive.
  • Cost increases not covered by future grant increases remain the family’s responsibility.
  • Outside aid can reduce the student-employment component and may later reduce the Smith Grant.
