Carleton College Financial Aid 2027: 100% Need Met, No Loans

Carleton College will meet 100% of demonstrated financial need without student loans beginning in Fall 2027. For admitted international students who apply for aid on time, a package may combine grants, scholarships and student employment to cover the gap between Carleton’s assessed cost and the family contribution. This is need-based financial aid—not an automatic merit full ride—and international funding is limited.

What does the Carleton no-loan policy cover?

Carleton announced on September 14, 2026 that, starting with Fall 2027, loans will be removed from need-based financial aid packages and replaced by grants and scholarships. The college says it will continue meeting every admitted student’s full demonstrated need.

Aid can help with tuition, textbooks, housing, meals, student activities, off-campus study and other educational costs. Student employment may remain part of a package. “No loans” means Carleton will not include loans in its need-based offer; it does not mean every recipient pays nothing. The family contribution is calculated from the financial information supplied.

Who is eligible?

You should be a first-year applicant seeking admission for Fall 2027 and submit all required admission and financial-aid materials by your chosen round. International applicants are students who do not hold U.S. citizenship, permanent residency or DACA status.

International funding is limited. Carleton says most international scholarships are awarded through Regular Decision, with few available in Early Decision. If you need aid, you must request it before admission; Carleton will not add or revise international aid after an admission offer.

Financial-aid forms for international students

International applicants who cannot meet the full four-year cost should submit one of Carleton’s accepted need-analysis forms:

  • International Student Application for Financial Assistance: Carleton provides this as a free alternative.
  • CSS Profile: Also accepted; College Board fees may apply unless a waiver is available.

All international applicants must also submit Carleton’s Certification of Finances. Use figures and supporting records that are complete and consistent. The aid application and admission application are due on the same date for your round.

English-language and testing rules

SAT and ACT scores are optional. Carleton requires an English-proficiency result from applicants who do not speak English at home and have not taken classes in English for the past four years. It accepts TOEFL, IELTS and the Duolingo English Test. Check the current official international-applicant page for the applicable score guidance before booking a test.

How to apply

  1. Choose an application round. International applicants seeking significant aid should note Carleton’s statement that most international scholarships are awarded in Regular Decision.
  2. Complete an accepted application. Use Common App, Coalition or QuestBridge.
  3. Request school documents early. Arrange the transcript, counselor recommendation and two teacher recommendations.
  4. Complete the international requirements. Add certified translations and English-test results if required.
  5. Apply for aid before admission. Submit the free international aid form or CSS Profile, plus the Certification of Finances.
  6. Review and submit by the deadline. Do not wait for the final day because no official cutoff time or time zone is published.

Frequently asked questions

Is Carleton College fully funded for international students?

Carleton meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students, including international students, and will exclude loans from need-based packages starting in Fall 2027. The award depends on Carleton’s assessment of your family contribution, so it is not automatically a zero-cost scholarship.

Does Carleton offer no-loan aid to new international students?

Yes. The Fall 2027 no-loan policy applies to new and returning students, while Carleton’s international page confirms that it meets full demonstrated need. International aid is limited and must be requested during admission.

Do I need SAT or ACT scores?

No. Carleton is permanently test-optional. You may submit scores if they strengthen your application.

Can I apply without paying an application fee?

Yes. Carleton has no undergraduate application fee. International applicants can also use the free international financial-aid form instead of the CSS Profile.

What is the final deadline?

Early Decision I materials are due November 15, 2026. Early Decision II and Regular Decision materials are due January 15, 2027. Carleton does not publish a common cutoff time or time zone on the cited pages.
