Grinnell College is accepting fall 2027 applications from international first-year students and commits to meeting 100% of institutionally determined financial need for every admitted international student who submits the required aid application on time. International admission is need-aware, so the amount of aid requested is considered during admission. Applying to Grinnell itself is free.

Funding: 100% of Grinnell-calculated need for admitted international aid applicants
Study level: Undergraduate
Admission policy: Need-aware for international students
Application fee: None
Testing: SAT/ACT optional; English proficiency may be required
Deadlines: 15 November 2026, 5 January 2027 or 15 January 2027
Deadline time zone: Not stated on the official page
What does Grinnell financial aid cover?
Grinnell says it meets 100% of institutionally determined need for admitted international students who complete the financial-aid application by the deadline for their admission plan. The award is calculated from the family’s financial circumstances; it is not a guaranteed fixed-value merit scholarship. Outstanding international applicants may also be considered for merit scholarships regardless of financial need.
Applicants should not describe this as automatic full funding for everyone. Admission is need-aware, available resources are competitive, and the final package depends on Grinnell’s assessment of need.
Who can apply?
- First-year applicants who do not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency and do not have approved asylee or refugee status.
- Students completing a secondary-school credential that qualifies them for university study.
- Applicants able to submit the Common Application, official academic records, recommendations and any required external examination results.
- Students requesting financial aid who submit the CSS Profile or Grinnell’s International Student Application for Financial Assistance by the same deadline as their admission application.
Fall 2027 application deadlines
- Early Decision I: 15 November 2026.
- Early Decision II: 5 January 2027.
- Regular Decision: 15 January 2027.
The financial-aid application is due on the same date as the chosen admission plan. Grinnell’s official page does not state a cutoff time or time zone, so applicants should submit early instead of assuming an end-of-day deadline.
Required application documents
- Common Application.
- Official secondary-school transcript sent by a counselor, school administrator or authorized EducationUSA officer.
- Relevant official external examination results, depending on the applicant’s school system.
- School Report and counselor recommendation.
- Two academic teacher recommendations.
- Early Decision Agreement with the required signatures, if applying ED.
- CSS Profile for 2027–28 or Grinnell’s International Student Application for Financial Assistance when requesting need-based aid.
- Official English-proficiency result when required.
Fees and financial-aid forms
Grinnell charges no admission application fee. The college states that it does not provide CSS Profile fee waivers, but international applicants may instead complete Grinnell’s International Student Application for Financial Assistance and upload it through the applicant portal. Grinnell says the 2027 form will become available in early October.
International applicants who do not request aid in the first year cannot request it in later years, so students needing support must indicate that and complete the correct aid form during their initial application.
English-language and standardized tests
SAT and ACT scores are optional. Applicants whose native language is not English and/or whose main high-school language of instruction was not English must demonstrate proficiency. For fall 2027, Grinnell accepts the Duolingo English Test, IELTS and several TOEFL formats, including TOEFL iBT, Home Edition, Paper Edition and TOEFL Essentials. Official results are required. The official page does not publish one universal minimum score in the application checklist.
