Bates College meets 100% of the calculated financial need of every admitted student, including international students. For non-U.S. citizens, aid packages use grants and on-campus employment rather than loans and may be renewed for up to eight semesters. Admission for international applicants requesting aid is need-aware, so funding is substantial but not automatic: applicants must request aid when they apply.

What does Bates financial aid cover?

Bates calculates each admitted student’s financial need from the family’s financial information and meets that calculated amount. This is need-based aid, not a single merit scholarship with one fixed cash value. The amount therefore varies by family circumstances and Bates’s institutional assessment.

For international students who are not U.S. citizens, the official Bates guidance says aid packages consist of grant assistance and an on-campus work expectation of up to 20 hours per week. Loans are not included. Aid can continue for as many as eight semesters when the student remains eligible and submits any required renewal information.

Important: “100% of demonstrated need” does not mean every admitted student receives the full published cost of attendance. Bates first determines what the family can contribute, then builds aid to cover the remaining calculated need.

Who is eligible?

You may be considered if you are applying for first-year admission to Bates and complete the appropriate financial-aid process by your admission-plan deadline. International applicants from any citizenship may request aid, but Bates is need-aware for international admission. This means the amount of aid requested may be considered in the admission decision.

You must indicate your intention to apply for need-based financial aid on the admission application. Bates states that an international student who does not request aid before admission cannot request institutional financial aid after being admitted.

Documents and testing

Admission documents

  • Common Application or Coalition Application through Scoir
  • Official secondary-school transcript and school profile
  • School recommendation and other supporting materials required in the application portal
  • Any updated academic records requested by Bates

Financial-aid documents

  • Most non-U.S. international applicants: Bates International Student Application for Financial Aid (BISAFA), submitted through the Bates applicant portal
  • Canadian applicants requesting aid: CSS Profile and supporting financial documents, as directed by Bates
  • Additional family-income or financial documents if Bates requests them during review

Non-Canadian international applicants do not need to submit the CSS Profile; Bates directs them to BISAFA instead.

English and standardized tests

SAT and ACT scores are optional for all applicants. International applicants must submit official TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo English Test results if English is neither their native language nor the primary language of instruction throughout secondary school. Applicants who meet Bates’s stated language condition do not need an English-test score.

Bates application deadlines for 2027 entry

Application plan Admission and aid deadline
Early Decision I November 15, 2026
Early Decision II January 10, 2027
Regular Decision January 10, 2027

Bates says the application and financial-aid materials are due by the applicable application deadline, while school supporting materials may arrive shortly afterward. The current official page does not provide one common submission time or time zone for these three deadlines, so submit early rather than assuming an end-of-day cutoff.

How to apply

  1. Choose an admission plan. Review the binding Early Decision terms carefully before selecting EDI or EDII; otherwise use Regular Decision.
  2. Start the admission application. Apply through the Common Application or Coalition Application through Scoir. Bates charges no application fee.
  3. Request financial aid immediately. Mark that you intend to apply for need-based aid in the admission application. Do not wait for an admission result.
  4. Activate the Bates portal. After submitting the admission application, use the portal instructions sent by Bates.
  5. Submit the correct aid form. Most international applicants complete BISAFA in the portal; Canadian applicants follow the CSS Profile route.
  6. Send required academic and language records. Arrange official transcripts, recommendations and, when required, English-proficiency results.
  7. Check the portal. Monitor the checklist and respond promptly if Bates asks for missing or additional documents.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bates College financial aid fully funded?

Bates commits to meeting 100% of its calculated demonstrated need for admitted students. Because the calculation depends on family finances, it is more accurate to call this full demonstrated-need funding than a guaranteed full-cost scholarship.

Can international students apply?

Yes. Bates accepts international aid applications and meets the calculated need of admitted students, but international admission is need-aware and funding must be requested during the admission process.

Does Bates require the CSS Profile from international applicants?

Most non-U.S. international applicants use BISAFA and do not submit the CSS Profile. Canadian applicants requesting aid use the CSS Profile and supporting documentation.

Is there an application fee?

No. Bates has eliminated the undergraduate application fee for all applicants.

Are SAT or ACT scores required?

No. Bates is test-optional for all applicants.

Can I request aid after admission?

International students who did not request need-based aid before admission cannot apply for Bates institutional aid afterward. Indicate your aid request on the admission application.
