University of Chicago financial aid for fall 2027 is open to first-year international applicants and can meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for students who are admitted with aid. International applicants may also receive merit scholarships, with every admission applicant considered automatically. Need-based amounts are individually calculated and may include grants or scholarships plus a student-work expectation.

Quick facts

  • Aid deadlines: November 15, January 15 or February 15, according to the admission plan

What does UChicago financial aid cover?

UChicago determines a family contribution after reviewing the financial information supplied by the student and parents. The difference between that contribution and the university’s cost of attendance is the student’s demonstrated financial need. UChicago states that it meets that full calculated need for admitted students.

A package can include need-based gift aid, which does not need to be repaid, and a student-work component. Work is an expected contribution rather than an upfront grant: students who choose not to work should not assume that amount will be replaced with additional gift aid. The precise award therefore varies by household income, assets, family size and other circumstances.

International eligibility

  • You must be applying as a first-year undergraduate; international transfer applicants are not eligible for need-based aid.
  • You are treated as an international aid applicant if you are neither a U.S. citizen nor a U.S. permanent resident, regardless of where you attend school.
  • If you may need aid at any point during four undergraduate years, you must request it with your admission application.
  • If you apply for need-based aid and are admitted with funding, UChicago commits to meeting 100% of demonstrated need.
  • All applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships; there is no separate merit application or essay.

International applicants who do not request need-based aid when applying cannot expect institutional need-based funds to become available after admission. Declare your need honestly at the start.

Required admission documents

  • Common Application or Coalition Application
  • UChicago supplement essays
  • Secondary School Report
  • Official high-school transcript
  • Two teacher evaluations
  • Mid-year report when available
  • Official English translations alongside any documents not issued in English
  • US$90 application fee, unless automatically waived because you request need-based aid

International financial-aid documents

  • Student Financial Aid Worksheet completed in the UChicago Account
  • Supporting family financial records requested through the portal, such as parent tax returns
  • Business records where applicable
  • Receipts, bank statements or other evidence requested for the household’s circumstances

UChicago tells international applicants to complete its own online worksheet and provide supporting documents through the secure applicant account. Do not substitute the CSS Profile unless the university specifically requests it: the current official instructions say UChicago does not accept the CSS Profile or documents submitted through IDOC.

Testing and English requirements

UChicago follows a “No Harm” testing policy: SAT and ACT scores are optional, and applicants can decide whether sharing scores strengthens their application. International applicants are invited to submit an English-proficiency examination if it represents their ability, but formal English-test scores are not required when strong English mastery is already demonstrated throughout the application.

Students who submit English results may initially provide official or self-reported scores. Official reports are required only if the student is admitted and enrolls. UChicago does not offer conditional admission or an English-as-a-second-language program.

How to apply

  1. Select an admission plan. Choose EA, ED I, ED II or Regular Decision based on whether you want a binding commitment and when your application will be ready.
  2. Submit the Common App or Coalition App. Complete UChicago’s essays and all school-specific questions.
  3. Request need-based aid immediately. Indicate your intention in the application if aid may be needed during any of the four years.
  4. Create or access the UChicago Account. Use it to complete the Student Financial Aid Worksheet and upload supporting documents.
  5. Send school materials. Arrange the transcript, school report, two teacher recommendations and later the mid-year report.
  6. Check translations. Upload the original document and an official English translation when needed.
  7. Monitor the portal. Respond quickly if Financial Aid requests tax, business, banking or other verification records.

Merit scholarships

First-year international applicants are eligible for UChicago merit awards. Every applicant is considered automatically, so no separate merit-scholarship form or essay is required. Awards may be partial tuition, a one-time amount or renewable. Merit consideration is separate from the need-based calculation.

Frequently asked questions

Is UChicago financial aid fully funded?

For an admitted first-year applicant with full demonstrated need, the calculated package can reach the full cost of attendance. It is not one fixed scholarship for every recipient, and packages may include a student-work expectation.

Can international students receive 100% of demonstrated need?

Yes. UChicago explicitly states that admitted first-year international applicants who applied for need-based aid can have 100% of demonstrated need met.

Is the CSS Profile required?

No under the current UChicago instructions. Applicants use the UChicago Financial Aid Worksheet and submit supporting documents through their applicant account.

Is there an application fee?

The fee is US$90 for applicants not requesting need-based aid. UChicago automatically waives it for students applying for need-based financial aid.

Are SAT or ACT scores required?

No. Submission is optional under UChicago’s No Harm testing policy.

Is an English test compulsory?

Not in every case. International applicants may submit English-proficiency scores, but those who already demonstrate mastery through their application do not have to submit a formal exam.

Can international transfer students apply for need-based aid?

No. The current international-applicant FAQ says there are no exceptions for international transfers.
