Duke University’s fall 2027 application is open, and first-year international applicants may request four-year need-based aid that meets 100% of Duke-calculated demonstrated need. Admission is need-aware for international aid applicants, so applicants must declare their need when applying. Duke’s package is individualized and can combine grant aid, work-study and loans rather than being one fixed full-ride scholarship.

What does Duke financial aid cover?

Duke calculates need as its cost of attendance minus the expected family contribution. The university states that it meets 100% of demonstrated need, meaning the aid offered equals the maximum Duke-calculated eligibility. A package will most likely contain grant aid alongside a work-study expectation and a loan component, so “100% need met” should not be interpreted as an automatic all-grant award.

International aid awards are issued for four years and automatically renewed for students who continue to receive aid. Duke also states that its student medical-insurance charge is covered with grant aid for international students receiving need-based assistance.

Who is eligible?

  • First-year applicants of any citizenship may request need-based financial aid.
  • International applicants requesting aid are reviewed in a separate, need-aware admission pool.
  • You must mark “yes” to financial-aid interest on the admission application.
  • If admitted after declaring no financial-aid interest, an international student cannot apply for institutional aid later during undergraduate study.
  • International transfer applicants are not eligible for Duke need-based or merit scholarships.

Testing and English proficiency

Duke is test-optional for first-year applicants in the 2026–27 admission cycle. Applicants who submit SAT or ACT scores may self-report them initially; official reports are required only from students who enroll.

For non-native English speakers or students outside an English-medium curriculum, Duke recommends—but does not require—an English-proficiency test. Its published expected scores include IELTS 7, Duolingo 130, PTE Academic 70, Cambridge 180 and TOEFL iBT 100.
