What does Rice financial aid cover?
Rice says international students who receive need-based aid have 100% of their demonstrated need met with institutional grant aid. The amount is calculated individually from family income, assets and other financial information. This is not a fixed-value scholarship or an automatic full ride for every applicant.
International students are not eligible for the Rice Investment income bands advertised for eligible domestic students. Their assistance instead comes through Rice’s limited international need-based grant programme. Because admission is need-aware, the amount an international applicant requests may be considered during admission.
Who can apply?
- Foreign nationals completing secondary school by the end of the current academic year.
- Students living outside the United States or living in the United States with an eligible temporary visa or pending permanent-residency status.
- Applicants who will hold a high-school diploma or equivalent before enrolment.
- Students who indicate their intention to request aid on the International Student Financial Statement and complete the CSS Profile.
Rice states that an international student admitted without requesting financial aid cannot apply for institutional aid in later years. Request aid during the initial first-year application if it may be needed.

Merit scholarships
Rice automatically considers admitted first-year students, including international students, for merit scholarships. No separate merit-scholarship application or interview is required. Rice reports that about 20% of admitted students receive a merit award, but these competitive awards are not guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rice financial aid fully funded for international students?
Rice meets 100% of its calculated demonstrated need for admitted international aid recipients through institutional grants. The award varies by financial circumstances, so it should not be described as a guaranteed fixed full scholarship for every international applicant.
Is Rice need-blind for international applicants?
No. Rice is need-aware for international applicants, meaning requested aid can be considered during admission.
Does the package include loans?
The official international-aid page describes assistance as institutional grant aid. It does not promise the domestic Rice Investment income guarantees to international students.
Can I request aid after enrolling?
Rice says international students admitted without requesting aid cannot apply for aid in later years. Declare your need when you first apply.
Is the SAT or ACT required?
No. Rice recommends but does not require SAT or ACT scores for the current cycle.
Does Rice waive the international application fee?
No. The current official international-applicant page states that the US$75 application fee is nonrefundable and international applicants are not eligible to request a Rice fee waiver.
