Caltech Financial Aid 2027 is available to international first-year applicants who request need-based aid when applying for admission. Caltech states that it meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for admitted students, including eligible international aid applicants. International admission is need-aware because the available aid budget is limited.

Key dates: Restrictive Early Action is due November 1, 2026; Regular Decision is due January 4, 2027. Caltech has not yet replaced its separate international financial-aid form page with fall 2027 dates, so applicants must check the aid portal for the new CSS Profile and supporting-document deadlines.

What does the financial aid cover?

Caltech does not advertise a fixed scholarship amount for every student. Instead, it calculates each admitted applicant’s demonstrated financial need using family financial information and builds an individual aid package. The university’s official international-applicant page says its need-based aid meets 100% of demonstrated financial need.

This is need-based funding, not an automatic merit scholarship. The final award depends on Caltech’s assessment of the family’s ability to contribute and the student’s approved cost of attendance. International students are not eligible for United States federal student-aid funds, so their institutional package follows Caltech’s international-aid rules.

Who is eligible?

You may apply as an international first-year applicant if you are not a US citizen or permanent resident and attend secondary school outside the United States. Applicants must be completing secondary education and must not already be enrolled at another university, except for the limited southern-hemisphere situation described by Caltech.

International students seeking aid must state their intention to apply for financial aid in the admission application. Caltech warns that students who do not request aid as incoming first-years—or who do not qualify for aid in their first year—generally cannot apply for need-based aid in later undergraduate years. International transfer and 3/2 applicants are not eligible for this aid.

Academic preparation

Caltech expects rigorous secondary-school preparation. Its current international guidance lists four years of mathematics including calculus, one year each of physics and chemistry, four years of English, and at least two years of history or social sciences. Biology is recommended. Caltech publishes limited alternative evidence routes when calculus, chemistry or physics is genuinely unavailable because of an unresolvable school constraint.

Required admission documents

  • Common Application or QuestBridge application
  • Caltech supplemental responses
  • School Report
  • Official secondary-school transcript, normally covering grades 9–11 or the international equivalent
  • Mid-Year Report when final-year first-term grades become available
  • One recommendation from a STEM teacher
  • One recommendation from a humanities or social-science teacher
  • SAT or ACT results
  • English-proficiency results when required
  • Original documents plus certified or school-provided English translations where applicable

Optional research papers, publications, STEM portfolios and non-STEM portfolios may be submitted through the applicant portal after the application deadline, following Caltech’s instructions.

Financial-aid documents

Caltech’s international-aid process normally uses the CSS Profile and supporting family financial documents, including relevant tax-return or non-filer information. However, the university’s detailed REA and Regular Decision aid-document pages still display the previous entry cycle. Because Caltech has not yet published the replacement 2027 dates on those pages, this guide does not carry forward old deadlines.

Practical advice: indicate your aid intention in the admission application, create your applicant and CSS Profile accounts early, and check Caltech’s international financial-aid page regularly. Submit every requested document by the date shown in your own portal.

Testing and English requirements

Caltech requires either the SAT or ACT for fall 2027 first-year admission. REA applicants must complete standardized testing before November 30, 2026, while Regular Decision testing must be completed before December 31, 2026. Caltech publishes no minimum score and evaluates results as part of holistic review.

An English-proficiency test is required for international applicants unless English is the applicant’s native language or the primary language of instruction at the secondary school. Caltech accepts the Duolingo English Test, IELTS and TOEFL. Even when English is the school’s primary teaching language, Caltech strongly recommends a test score for non-native English speakers.

Application deadlines

Application route Admission deadline Additional material window
Restrictive Early Action November 1, 2026 Required and supplemental materials accepted through November 6
Regular Decision January 4, 2027 Required and supplemental materials accepted through January 10

Caltech’s official pages do not state a deadline time or time zone. Applicants should submit before the stated calendar date rather than waiting for a presumed end-of-day cutoff.

How to apply

  1. Choose a decision plan. Review Caltech’s restrictions before selecting Restrictive Early Action; Regular Decision remains the main admission round.
  2. Prepare academic evidence. Confirm that your transcript and current courses meet the mathematics, physics, chemistry, English and social-science expectations.
  3. Complete the application. Apply through Common App or QuestBridge and answer Caltech’s supplements.
  4. Declare financial-aid intent. International applicants must request aid during the first-year admission process.
  5. Arrange recommendations and school documents. Give counselors and teachers enough time to submit official materials.
  6. Send tests. Submit SAT or ACT results and, when required, DET, IELTS or TOEFL scores.
  7. Complete the financial-aid file. Follow the new-cycle instructions in Caltech’s aid portal once the fall 2027 forms and deadlines appear.
  8. Monitor the portal. Resolve missing items quickly and retain submission confirmations.
