Tufts University will meet 100% of the demonstrated financial need of every admitted undergraduate, including international students, for the 2027 entry cycle. What does Tufts financial aid cover?
Tufts defines demonstrated need as the difference between its annual cost of attendance and the amount it determines that a family can contribute. The cost-of-attendance calculation includes tuition and standard expenses such as books, personal costs, and transportation to campus. The exact award therefore varies by applicant; Tufts does not publish one flat scholarship amount.
The university states that it meets 100% of demonstrated financial need for every admitted student regardless of citizenship. International aid is need-based rather than merit-based: Tufts explicitly says that it does not offer undergraduate merit scholarships. Applicants should therefore present complete and accurate family financial information rather than expecting an automatic academic award.
Graduates of United World College schools may also qualify for the Davis United World College Scholars grant of up to US$10,000 per year. Tufts says this grant and its financial-aid grants can be renewed for up to four years, provided the student remains in good academic standing.
Who is eligible?
You can be considered if you are applying for first-year undergraduate admission to Tufts’ School of Arts and Sciences, School of Engineering, School of the Museum of Fine Arts, or the combined BFA + BA/BS programme. International applicants submit the same core admission credentials as other first-year applicants.
The crucial international-aid rule is timing. You must indicate on your admission application that you intend to apply for financial aid. Tufts says international students who do not request aid at the time of application cannot later receive institutional aid. Because the university has limited funds for international applicants, requesting aid can be considered during admission; applicants should only state that they can pay the full cost if that is genuinely sustainable for all four years.
Documents required
A complete first-year admission file normally includes:
- Common Application, Coalition Application via Scoir, or QuestBridge Application
- Tufts short-answer responses
- Official secondary-school transcript(s), including transcripts from any college courses taken for credit
- Senior-year grades
- Counselor or school-official recommendation
- One recommendation from a core academic teacher
- English-proficiency results when required
- Visual-art portfolio for BFA and combined BFA + BA/BS applicants
- US$75 application fee or an approved fee waiver
For need-based aid, international applicants may initially submit either the free International Student Financial Aid Application (ISFAA) through the applicant portal or the CSS Profile. Tufts does not provide a CSS Profile fee waiver before admission, so it specifically permits applicants facing that cost barrier to use the ISFAA. Admitted international aid applicants must then submit the CSS Profile within five to seven days of their decision; Tufts provides those admitted students with a CSS Profile fee-waiver code. Supporting financial documents are later submitted through IDOC.
English language and testing rules
Tufts is test-optional for undergraduate admission, so SAT or ACT scores are not required. Applicants who submit scores may self-report them, although enrolled students must later verify those scores.
Proof of English proficiency is required when an applicant’s primary language is not English, unless the applicant has studied for at least three years in a secondary school where English is the primary language of instruction. Tufts accepts TOEFL, IELTS, PTE Academic and the Duolingo English Test. The university publishes recommended—not mandatory—benchmarks, including IELTS 7, PTE 68 and Duolingo 130. Applicants should use the current Tufts page for the TOEFL scale because its reporting changed in January 2026.
Deadlines for 2027 entry
Tufts lists the following admission deadlines for the current cycle. The official page does not state a cutoff time or time zone, so applicants should submit before the date begins in their own location rather than assuming a late-night grace period.
- Early Decision I: 2 November 2026
- Early Decision II: 4 January 2027
- Regular Decision: 4 January 2027
The corresponding aid-form deadlines are 16 November for Early Decision I, 15 January for Early Decision II, and 1 February for Regular Decision. Supporting tax documents have later deadlines: 1 December, 1 February and 15 February respectively. U.S. citizens and permanent residents also submit the FAFSA; international citizens do not.
How to apply for Tufts financial aid
- Choose an admission round. Early Decision is binding, while Regular Decision is not.
- Prepare the admission file. Collect transcripts, school recommendations, senior-year grades and required English-proficiency evidence.
- Submit an accepted application. Use the Common Application, Coalition Application via Scoir, or QuestBridge.
- Request financial aid before submission. International applicants must mark their intention to seek aid on the admission application.
- Use the correct fee-waiver option. International citizens seeking need-based aid should request the Tufts-specific application-fee waiver.
- Open the applicant portal. After Tufts processes the admission application, use the portal to monitor credentials and access the ISFAA.
- Submit the ISFAA or CSS Profile by the aid deadline. The ISFAA is the free option for international applicants who cannot pay the CSS Profile fee.
- Respond quickly if admitted. International aid recipients must complete the CSS Profile within five to seven days, using the waiver code provided by Tufts, and submit requested documents through IDOC.
Application advice
- Do not postpone the aid request until after admission; Tufts says late requests from international students are ineligible.
- Use the free ISFAA if the CSS Profile fee is a barrier.
- Keep translated financial records ready for the later IDOC stage.
- Check that every recommendation and transcript has arrived in the applicant portal.
- Apply Early Decision only if Tufts is your clear first choice and you understand the binding commitment.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tufts financial aid fully funded?
Tufts does not promise the same full-ride package to everyone. It promises to meet 100% of the demonstrated need it calculates for each admitted student. A high-need applicant’s package may cover most or all billed and estimated costs, while another family’s award may be smaller.
Can international students receive Tufts financial aid?
Yes. Tufts says it meets 100% of demonstrated need for admitted students regardless of citizenship. International applicants must request aid when they submit their admission application.
Is Tufts need-blind for international students?
No. Tufts has limited international aid resources, so the amount of assistance requested can affect admission. Once an aid applicant is admitted, Tufts commits to meeting its calculated demonstrated need.
Does Tufts offer merit scholarships?
No. Its international-aid page states that undergraduate merit scholarships are not offered. The main institutional funding route is need-based aid.
Is the CSS Profile mandatory at application?
No. International applicants may submit the free ISFAA initially. Admitted international aid applicants must later submit the CSS Profile, and Tufts provides a fee-waiver code at that stage.
Are SAT or ACT scores required?
No. Tufts is test-optional for all undergraduate applicants.
