Funding and costs

EMMIR says Erasmus+ scholarship holders receive €1,400 monthly for 24 months, a total of €33,600 in monthly payments. Their health insurance, university registration and student service fees are covered. Scholarship recipients must pay mobility costs such as travel, visas, vaccinations and residence permits from the monthly stipend: there is no separate travel or installation payment. The number of scholarships is very limited, and selection is merit-based.

The programme also has non-fee-paying self-funded places, which cover participation-related costs but not living or travel, and fee-paying self-funded places at €4,500 per semester plus living and travel. Mark the funding options you want considered in the application; do not confuse admission to a self-funded place with a scholarship offer.

Who is eligible?

Applicants need a first degree, such as a bachelor’s degree or equivalent, in a field related to migration studies. EMMIR lists social sciences, history, cultural studies, educational sciences, law, economics, development studies and journalism as examples. The final grade should be at least C+ or equivalent, with a finalised first degree documented by the scholarship deadline. Applicants also document knowledge of migration studies, intercultural relations and empirical methods through coursework or other evidence. Relevant professional experience can strengthen an application.

If your most recent degree is over five years old, explain your return to study in the statement of purpose. A previous master’s degree does not automatically bar admission, but requires a convincing justification. Someone who has already received an Erasmus Mundus Joint Master scholarship cannot receive another EMMIR Erasmus+ scholarship. EMMIR welcomes suitably qualified applicants without a nationality restriction stated on its entry-requirements page; eligibility still depends on its academic and language rules.

English and other language requirements

Applicants whose native language is not English or whose undergraduate instruction was not in English must provide evidence of English proficiency by the application deadline. EMMIR describes possible evidence from English-medium higher education or professional work, as well as language tests, and lists waiver circumstances. It may verify language skills later. Its entry-requirements page says language certificates are valid for two years. Native English speakers must show proficiency in a second language relevant to migration studies. Check the official page’s test-score image and waiver rules directly; do not assume a particular score or exemption.

Documents to prepare

  • Clear copy of a valid passport and a CV.
  • A one- to two-page statement of purpose explaining your motivation for EMMIR.
  • First-degree diploma and transcript, plus other relevant degrees; evidence of a finalised first degree and final grade is required for scholarship consideration by the deadline.
  • Documentation of language proficiency and any other relevant evidence.
  • Email addresses for professional or academic referees. Do not upload reference letters: EMMIR contacts referees itself when needed.

Upload supporting documents as PDFs in English or with official English translations. Certified paper copies are requested only from applicants who receive an offer; those applicants have ten calendar days after notification to send the specified documents and proof of dispatch.

How to apply

  1. Read the official entry requirements, funding rules and application procedures.

  4. Upload the required PDFs, enter referee email addresses, and review names and dates against your passport and documents.

Deadline and time zone

The scholarship and non-fee-paying self-funded deadline is 20 December 2026 at 23:59 CET, the German winter time (UTC+1). That is 01:59 on 21 December in Türkiye (UTC+3), though applicants should work to the official German deadline. The later fee-paying deadline, at most 15 July 2027 while places remain, does not extend scholarship eligibility. EMMIR says late database timestamps are not considered for the scholarship. Admission decisions are expected from early April 2027.

Practical applicant notes

Use your short field-knowledge answer to show relevant modules, essays, research methods or professional work, rather than a generic interest in travel. Explain how the programme’s multi-country structure fits your specific migration-related goals. Budget for required mobility from the stipend, because the scholarship does not add a separate airfare allowance. Prepare translations and possible certified copies early, but send paper documents only if you receive the notification requesting them.
