What the Yale World Fellows package covers

Selected fellows receive a support package intended to make full-time residence in New Haven possible. Yale’s official programme page lists:

  • a taxable stipend to cover living costs in New Haven;
  • a modest furnished one- or two-bedroom apartment for the programme period;
  • medical insurance; and
  • round-trip travel from the fellow’s home country.

Yale does not publish a fixed stipend amount on the current programme page, so applicants should not budget around an unofficial figure. This is a professional leadership fellowship, not a Yale degree or conventional tuition scholarship.

Who is eligible?

  • You must be a citizen of a country other than the United States. Dual U.S. citizens may apply, but Yale states that preference is given to candidates whose work focuses outside the United States.
  • You should normally be between five and 25 years into your professional career and have significant accomplishments at regional, national or international level.
  • You must be fluent in English and capable of participating fully in an intensive programme.
  • You must be available to live at Yale in New Haven from mid-August through mid-December 2027.
  • You should demonstrate impact, integrity, leadership potential and a commitment to improving society.

There is no formal minimum or maximum age. Yale says the average World Fellow is 39, but career evidence matters more than age. Full-time students and full-time academics whose primary occupation is student or scholar are generally not the programme’s target profile.

Required application materials

The current official instructions require applicants to prepare:

  • a résumé or curriculum vitae of no more than three pages;
  • a personal statement of no more than 600 words;
  • three letters of recommendation;
  • a brief video statement recorded through the application system; and
  • the US$20 application fee.

TOEFL or IELTS scores are not required. However, English fluency is essential and may be assessed during an interview if an applicant reaches the final stages.

How to apply for Yale World Fellows 2027

  1. Check your fit. Review the programme requirements and recent fellows’ profiles. The strongest applicants have measurable leadership outcomes rather than only strong job titles.
  2. Create an online account. First-time users receive a temporary PIN by email before setting a password.
  3. Prepare a focused three-page CV. Prioritise scale, outcomes, innovation, public value and career progression.
  4. Write the personal statement. Explain your leadership journey, the problem you are working to solve, the impact already achieved and why four months at Yale is timely.
  5. Choose three recommenders. Select people who can provide specific professional evidence about your integrity, achievements and future leadership potential.
  6. Record the video statement. Follow the instructions inside the portal and use the video to add personality and perspective rather than repeat the written statement.
  7. Pay the application fee and submit early. Confirm that every required field and recommendation request is complete before the deadline.

Deadline and time zone

The application closes on Wednesday, 2 December 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time. This is a stated time-specific deadline, not a general university admission date. Applicants outside the United States should convert Eastern Time carefully and allow time for email PIN delivery, video recording and recommendation requests.

How Yale selects World Fellows

Admission is highly competitive: Yale reports receiving thousands of applications for a very small cohort. The official selection criteria emphasise:

  • an established record of extraordinary achievement and integrity;
  • commitment to a “good society” and positive impact;
  • promise of future leadership with notable global influence;
  • critical, creative, entrepreneurial and strategic thinking;
  • the ability both to benefit from and contribute to Yale’s global community; and
  • commitment to the full residential programme, including mentoring and campus speaking.

The cohort is intentionally balanced across geographies, professions, experience and perspectives. Meeting the basic eligibility requirements is therefore only the starting point.

Applicant-fit guidance

This fellowship is best suited to mid-career professionals who can show a clear arc from responsibility to measurable public impact. A competitive application should connect three things: what you have already changed, the larger challenge you are positioned to address next, and how Yale’s cross-sector environment will accelerate that work.

Avoid presenting the programme as a career break or a generic networking opportunity. Demonstrate why residential participation in 2027 is strategically useful and how Yale students and the wider cohort will benefit from your experience. Quantified results, institutional reforms, communities reached, policies influenced or organisations built are more persuasive than broad leadership claims.

Practical application tips

  • Ask recommenders early and give them a short evidence brief with projects and outcomes they personally observed.
  • Use the CV to show progression and impact; use the personal statement to explain meaning, motivation and future direction.
  • Keep the video natural and specific. A concise real example of a difficult leadership decision can be more memorable than a polished biography.
  • Confirm that you can pause or restructure your professional responsibilities for four months before investing in the application.
  • Submit before the final day so a payment, browser or video-recording issue does not invalidate an otherwise strong application.
