KAUST VSRP Internship: $1,000 Monthly + Full Funding
The KAUST VSRP Internship accepts applications year-round. This fully funded research opportunity in Saudi Arabia provides a US$1,000 monthly stipend, housing and return airfare. The current admissions page specifies a stay of 2–6 months. Use this guide to decide whether a project fits your preparation and to assemble a focused application.

What the funding covers
KAUST’s internship funding includes tuition, campus accommodation, health insurance and relocation support covering visa and travel costs. The VSRP allowance is US$1,000 per month, paid in Saudi riyals. Accommodation includes a private bedroom and bathroom within a shared student apartment. Interns can use research facilities and participate in campus activities.
Build a personal budget for incidental spending before committing to a placement. Keep your offer and funding instructions together, and follow the university’s travel arrangements rather than booking on the assumption that any expense will be reimbursed.
Who can apply?
Applicants normally need third-year-or-higher undergraduate or master’s status, a GPA of 3.5/4 or equivalent, and English proficiency. Recent graduates may qualify within one year of the internship’s start. Current PhD candidates, KAUST students and KAUST alumni are excluded.
English requirements
For IELTS, KAUST specifies 6.5 overall and at least 6 in each section. Other accepted tests and degree-based exemptions are listed on the current official internship page.
Required documents
Prepare English transcripts, a CV, a statement of purpose, a passport valid for at least six months and a faculty recommender.
Ask your recommender early and give them a concise summary of the research you want to pursue. Check that your CV dates, transcript names and passport details agree. A clear statement should connect a specific project to evidence of what you have already learned or done; a generic list of interests gives the reviewer less to assess.
Find a suitable research project
The official catalogue lists over 100 active research projects. Examples include computational modelling of viral protein structures, coral recovery research, sustainable materials for water splitting, and artificial intelligence for fisheries monitoring. Project pages describe expected backgrounds and research outcomes; the catalogue can change as faculty needs change.
Start with the work itself. For a computational project, identify relevant programming, statistics or modelling experience. For an experimental project, describe techniques you have actually practised. A course project or laboratory assignment can be useful evidence when explained precisely. Do not imply expertise you have not yet developed.
How to apply
- Browse the official project catalogue and read the full description of a suitable project.
- Check your eligibility and prepare documents before starting the form.
- Use the project’s Apply button to enter KAUST’s application process.
- Explain your research fit and realistic availability. Submit only one active application at a time.
- Review every field, keep the submission confirmation and monitor the email address you used.
Application window and timing
Rolling applications — no single annual closing date. Plan around your intended start date and the selected project’s availability. This guide describes the continuing VSRP programme; it does not claim a separately announced 2027 scholarship cohort.
Allow yourself time to obtain documents, discuss academic leave with your home institution and respond to follow-up requests. Agree on workable dates before making travel commitments. Keep checking the official page if your intended placement is several months away.
Selection and application tips
The VSRP FAQ describes administrative review, faculty assessment with an interview where needed, and an admissions interview. Admission remains a university decision.
- Show a concrete fit: connect one or two relevant experiences to the project’s methods and goals.
- Explain what you contributed: distinguish your own work from the broader team’s results.
- Prepare to discuss limitations: be ready to explain a difficulty, how you investigated it and what you would try next.
- Keep the application readable: use descriptive filenames, legible scans and a concise, carefully proofread CV.
