Funding and Benefits
VCIS is a competitive merit scholarship with five possible award levels. The amount depends on the applicant’s ranking and the availability of funds:
- A$60,000, paid for one year in two equal semester instalments;
- A$40,000, paid for one year in two equal semester instalments;
- A$20,000, paid for one semester;
- A$10,000, paid for one semester; or
- A$5,000, paid for one semester.
The award is offered only during the student’s first year and is not renewable for later years. Availability of some values may be limited to particular cohorts. Recipients who also hold the Sydney International Student Award can receive VCIS funding only up to a maximum of A$40,000.
This is a high-value tuition contribution, not a guaranteed full-cost scholarship. The official terms state that no other amount is payable, so applicants must plan for remaining tuition, Overseas Student Health Cover, accommodation, travel, visa and living expenses.
Eligibility Requirements
To be considered, you must:
- meet the University’s definition of an international student;
- have applied for, but not yet commenced, an eligible bachelor’s degree or postgraduate coursework degree;
- choose a CRICOS-registered award program usually delivered onshore at the University of Sydney;
- receive an unconditional offer of admission by the relevant scholarship-round closing date; and
- meet all academic, English-language, Genuine Student and course-specific admission requirements.
Students beginning a second University of Sydney degree may be eligible if they have not previously held VCIS. Recipients of Australian Government scholarships are not eligible.
Documents to Prepare
VCIS uses the admission application for assessment, so there is no separate scholarship document set. International coursework applicants should prepare:
- official academic certificates and transcripts;
- proof of identity, normally the passport identity page;
- proof of English-language proficiency when required;
- certified English translations for documents issued in another language;
- any course-specific supplementary form, personal statement, portfolio or curriculum vitae;
- additional Genuine Student information if requested; and
- payment of the admission application-processing fee, unless an exemption applies.
The University currently lists a non-refundable A$150 application-processing fee for international applicants applying to study onshore. The fee covers applications made within one year. Exemptions can apply to current students, certain fully sponsored or fully funded applicants, and some eligible recruitment-event participants.
English-Language Requirements
English requirements depend on the selected course. Applicants may qualify through recognised previous study in English or an accepted test. The University lists IELTS, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, LanguageCert Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced and Cambridge C2 Proficiency among its accepted pathways, subject to current conditions and course-specific minimums.
Do not use a generic score for every program. Check the exact course page and the official English-language concordance information. Some programs with professional accreditation set higher requirements.
How to Apply
- Select an eligible coursework degree. Confirm that the program is CRICOS-registered, normally delivered onshore and open for your chosen 2027 semester.
- Check admission requirements. Review academic prerequisites, English requirements, selection tasks and the Genuine Student requirement.
- Apply for admission. Applicants with overseas qualifications normally apply directly through the course page or through an authorised University of Sydney agent. Some students with recognised Australian qualifications apply through UAC.
- Upload complete documents. Missing academic, identity, English or supplementary evidence can delay the unconditional offer needed for scholarship consideration.
- Pay the applicable admission fee. The current direct fee is A$150 unless an exemption applies.
- Secure an unconditional offer by the round deadline. A conditional offer is not sufficient for VCIS consideration.
- Wait for automatic assessment. The University ranks eligible applicants on academic merit; no separate VCIS form is required.
- Accept promptly if selected. Follow the deadline in the scholarship offer and remain enrolled after the census date.

The official scholarship page states dates but does not publish a cutoff time or time zone. Do not assume midnight in your own country. Aim to obtain the unconditional offer well before the listed date and follow any exact timing shown in Sydney Student, UAC or your offer correspondence.
An additional offer round is planned for eligible International Baccalaureate graduates after results are released in December 2026 and for international UAC applicants after the 23 December offer round.
Practical Applicant Notes
- Admission timing is decisive. VCIS eligibility depends on receiving an unconditional offer—not merely submitting an application—by the round deadline.
- The maximum is not guaranteed. Awards range from A$5,000 to A$60,000 and depend on ranking and available funds.
- Academic merit controls selection. The University assesses the admission record rather than a separate scholarship essay.
- Budget beyond the award. Even A$60,000 may not cover the full degree and living costs.
- Maintain the required average. Recipients paid in two instalments must maintain a minimum semester average mark of 65 and have no outstanding fees for the next payment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is VCIS a fully funded scholarship?
No. It provides a one-time award of A$5,000 to A$60,000, depending on ranking. The University does not state that it covers all tuition and living expenses.
Do I need a separate scholarship application?
No. Eligible international applicants with an unconditional admission offer by the relevant round date are considered automatically.
Can master’s students apply?
Yes. Eligible postgraduate coursework master’s applicants can be considered alongside bachelor’s applicants. Research degrees are not included under this scheme.
Can I apply with a conditional offer?
You may begin the admission process with a conditional offer, but VCIS eligibility requires an unconditional offer by the scholarship round’s closing date.
What is the next deadline?
The next published Semester 1, 2027 round closes on 5 October 2026. A further Semester 1 round closes on 16 November 2026. No cutoff time or time zone is stated on the official page.
