The Wellcome Sanger Institute lists a 24 November 2026 deadline for its 2027 4-Year PhD Programme, but its live application form currently displays “The PhD application is now closed.” Because these two official Sanger pages currently conflict, applicants should verify the live form before preparing a submission. The programme itself offers 12 funded studentships with full tuition-fee support regardless of nationality, a rising tax-free stipend, and reimbursement of visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs for international students.
Wellcome Sanger Institute, Cambridge
Four-year PhD
12 fully funded studentships
24 November 2026, 09:00 GMT
Funding and benefits
Successful candidates receive full University of Cambridge tuition-fee support regardless of nationality. The Sanger Institute’s October 2026 stipend table lists tax-free annual payments of £25,649 in year one, £26,228 in year two, £26,806 in year three and £27,385 in year four. International students can also have visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs reimbursed.
Students register with the University of Cambridge, become members of a Cambridge College, and receive a University of Cambridge PhD degree.
Programme structure
Students apply to the programme rather than to one fixed supervisor. During the first eight months, they complete three rotations in different research groups, including at least one computational or informatics rotation and one experimental laboratory rotation. The final PhD laboratory is selected by mutual agreement during the third rotation.
Eligibility
- Applicants should hold, or be about to achieve, a first-class or good UK 2:1 degree, or an equivalent overseas qualification.
- The programme is open to UK and overseas applicants, and funded tuition support is available regardless of nationality.
- Applicants should demonstrate strong preparation and research interest in genomics, biology, health, computational science or related fields relevant to Sanger research.
- Applicants apply to the programme, not directly to an individual faculty member.
English-language requirement
Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University of Cambridge’s English-language requirements before admission. The Sanger Institute states that this requirement does not need to be fulfilled before the initial programme application. The exact accepted tests, scores and exemption rules should be checked on Cambridge’s current postgraduate English-language page.
Required information and documents
- Academic qualifications and University transcript(s) in PDF format
- Relevant research or work experience statement, currently described as a maximum of 200 words
- Three faculty research areas of interest
- Research-interest and programme-fit statement, currently described as a maximum of 200 words
- Personal statement covering research experience, interests, career goals and reasons for applying, currently described as a maximum of 400 words
- Details for two academic referees
- GRE scores, if an overseas applicant has them; the Institute does not describe GRE as mandatory
Important: the detailed application-process page says its guidance will be updated for the live 2027 round. Check the live form for final word limits and the 2027 reference deadline before submission.
How to apply
- Review the Institute’s scientific programmes and potential supervisors.
- Check the official Sanger application form first. If it still displays “The PhD application is now closed,” do not rely on the published deadline alone; wait for or request clarification from the Postgraduate Programme Office.
- Enter academic qualifications and research experience.
- Select three faculty members whose research areas interest you.
- Complete the research-interest and personal statements using the limits shown in the live form.
- Upload transcripts and optional GRE results, if available.
- Provide institutional email addresses for two referees and confirm that they agree to submit references.
- Submit before the deadline, save the unique application URL, and monitor confirmation emails and reference status.
Deadline
The programme page lists Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 09:00 GMT as the 2027 closing date. However, the live 2027 application form currently says that the PhD application is closed. ScholarshipHubNow therefore treats the application status as unclear pending reconciliation of the official pages. This is the programme deadline, not a general University of Cambridge admissions deadline; applicants should check the live form and, if needed, contact the Postgraduate Programme Office before relying on the published date.
Selection process
Applications are assessed competitively. Shortlisted candidates are scheduled for interview on Monday 25 January 2027; candidates unable to attend that date may be interviewed by videoconference during the preceding two weeks. The Institute says applicants who have not heard by Monday 11 January 2027 should assume they were not shortlisted. Funded studentships are allocated after interviews.
Practical applicant tips
- Show evidence that you can work across both experimental and computational genomics.
- Choose three faculty interests that form a coherent research direction rather than unrelated names.
- Use concrete examples of research responsibility, analysis and problem solving.
- Contact referees before submission and track their confirmation messages.
- Do not submit a separate Cambridge admission application unless selected; the Institute says selected students apply to Cambridge afterward.
