Funding and benefits
The official funding page promises an employment contract of at least three years and public-sector pay. IMPRS-TP finances three months; the principal investigator’s grants support the remainder. Conference and other scientific training support is also available.
No exact monthly salary is published. The funding page names TVöD Bund, while the FAQ names TV-L. Confirm the applicable scale, contract percentage and take-home pay with the programme before accepting an offer. The FAQ confirms no tuition or participation fees; interview travel and accommodation are covered where applicable.
Who is eligible?
- Applicants from any country with a relevant master’s degree, equivalent qualification or medical degree.
- The qualification must be completed before the PhD starts; current master’s students may apply.
- For MSc qualifications, the published threshold is German grade 2.5 or better, subject to equivalence checks.
- English proficiency is expected. The qualification page recommends IELTS/TOEFL evidence but does not require test documentation at application; it states no universal minimum test score.
The clinical Residency/PhD route has additional medical recognition and German-language requirements: B1 at entry and C1 for Approbation. Its medical qualification rules differ from the traditional PhD route. Read Who qualifies and confirm your track with the office.
Required documents and application information
The application page requests school, bachelor’s and master’s academic records, two short essays covering research experience and motivation/research goals, and research-group preferences with specific interests. Two referees provide recommendations directly.
Upload originals plus English or German translations when needed. The FAQ says translations need not be certified when applying, although certified records may be needed after acceptance. A separate CV upload is unnecessary: the portal constructs it from your entries. An application photo is optional.
How to apply
- Read the eligibility guidance and participating laboratories before choosing the appropriate track.
- Create an account in the official application portal.
- Complete the English application, academic information, essays and laboratory preferences.
- Upload readable, unprotected documents. The instructions limit each upload to 5 MB; combine multi-page documents into one PDF.
- Enter two referees and trigger their invitation emails. Track receipt in the portal.
- Review every field and formally submit before the deadline. Saved, unsubmitted applications are not considered.
No application fee applies. Email or postal applications are not accepted. For lab choices, the overview says “at least 3” while the instructions say “up to 3”; prepare three participating groups and follow the portal’s current fields.
Deadlines for the 2027 intake
Applications opened on 15 August 2026. The official timeline lists 31 October 2026 at 24:00 Central European Time for applications and 7 November 2026 at 24:00 Central European Time for references. These are programme selection deadlines, not a general university admissions date. Submit early rather than relying on the final minute.
Selection process and criteria
Academic qualification and degree equivalence are checked. Research experience, motivation and laboratory fit are addressed through the requested essays and preferences; the reviewed pages do not publish a weighted scoring rubric. The timeline places final selection in March–May 2027. The FAQ requires shortlisted candidates to attend the interview week in Munich and describes reimbursement of their travel and accommodation.
