What does Berea College funding cover?
Berea’s official international-applicant page states that all admitted international students receive aid and scholarships covering 100% of tuition, housing, food and fees. Berea’s current admissions overview also says its Financial Freedom framework will cover tuition, housing, food, fees and supplies without loans for students beginning in fall 2027.
The offer is not the same as unlimited cash for every personal expense. Berea encourages international students to save earnings from the College Work Program toward personal costs. Every student participates in campus work for at least 10 hours per week; the college says most international students work 15–20 hours and earn more than US$2,000 during the academic year. Summer jobs may also be available.
After admission, international students are normally expected to provide a US$2,200 enrollment deposit before Berea issues the I-20. This is not an application fee. The deposit may be used toward certain expenses during enrollment, and Berea says additional aid may be available when an admitted student cannot pay all or part of it.
Who can apply?
The international route is designed for students seeking undergraduate study in the United States and needing substantial financial support. Applicants should:
- Meet university-entry requirements in their home country.
- Present outstanding secondary-school or leaving-examination results.
- Demonstrate financial need consistent with Berea’s mission.
- Submit one of Berea’s accepted English or standardized-test results.
- Apply for fall entry; new international students cannot begin in the spring term.
Applicants who already hold a bachelor’s degree are not eligible because Berea offers undergraduate degrees only. International transfer students may apply through the same international process, but Berea says its very limited places are normally reserved for students who have not had an opportunity to pursue higher education.
English-test requirements
There is no English-test waiver for international applicants. Berea requires an official score from at least one of the following options:
- TOEFL: 520 paper-based, 190 computer-based or 68 internet-based
- IELTS: overall 6.0, with at least 5.0 in every area
- Duolingo English Test: 95
- ACT: composite 19
- SAT: combined score 980
Berea says it will almost never consider a result more than two years old. Nursing applicants should also note the higher programme requirement: TOEFL iBT 83 with 26 in speaking.
Required documents
Berea’s current international checklist requires applicants to submit all materials through the online portal:
- Completed international admission application
- Copy of official secondary-school records
- Personal essay
- One teacher recommendation
- Financial Resource Recommendation
- Official TOEFL, IELTS, SAT, ACT or Duolingo result
- International Financial Questionnaire
Bank statements are not required with the International Financial Questionnaire. Reapplicants must submit a new application and fresh supporting materials, including records of any college or university study completed since their earlier application.

How competitive is selection?
Berea describes international admission as extremely competitive. The college receives hundreds of applications from around the world and normally enrolls about 40 or fewer new international students each year. Its International Admissions Committee uses a holistic review considering academic credentials, financial need, ambition, purpose and recommendations. Berea also says it is rare to admit more than one student from a country in a single year.
