Funding and benefits

• €3,200 monthly stipend. EUI states that applicants whose normal residence is within 90 km of Florence receive a lower rate.
• Up to ten months of residential research, subject to the hosting department’s decision and available funding.
• Office space and full library privileges, with department-specific arrangements.
• Visa and residence assistance for non-EU fellows and eligible non-EU family members.
• Participation in EUI seminars, workshops, colloquia, research networks and academic activities.

Department-specific duration and funding

Eligibility

• Candidates of all nationalities may apply.
• The main target group is established academics with an international reputation.
• The Department of Political and Social Sciences also considers exceptional early-career scientists.
• Former EUI professors or fellows become eligible after three years have elapsed since their last EUI contract.
• Applicants should have good knowledge of English and any other language relevant to the proposed research.
• Fellows must live in Florence throughout the fellowship and participate actively in their department’s academic activities.

Required documents

• A short curriculum vitae of no more than five pages, covering education, professional experience, prizes and other major achievements, with a selected publication list, in PDF.
• A two-to-four-page research proposal, in PDF.
• A copy of an identity document such as a passport or national ID card, in JPG format.
• Names and contact details of two referees whom EUI may contact later.

Reference letters are not requested at the initial application stage. Files should use standard international fonts and avoid macros, special characters and password protection.

EUI requires good English but does not list IELTS, TOEFL or another standardized English test for this call.

How to apply

2. Open the direct EUI application portal and register a new application account if necessary.
3. Complete the online form, including the intended length and dates of residence.
4. Upload the five-page CV, two-to-four-page research proposal and identity document in the required formats.
5. Provide the names and contact details of two referees.
6. Review every entry and attachment, then submit by 30 September 2026 at 14:00 CEST. Submitted applications cannot be modified.

The official programme, applicant guidance, conditions and application portal do not list an application fee.

Selection notes

A committee of teaching staff from the relevant department selects candidates. The EUI Executive Committee gives final approval. The decision is final and there is no appeal.

Applicants should show an established international academic profile, a clear research plan and a strong fit with the chosen department. The hosting department may offer a different or shorter stay than requested, depending on available funding.
