The European University Institute is accepting applications for the September 2026 round of its Fernand Braudel Senior Fellowships in Florence, Italy. Funding and benefits

Eligibility

  • Candidates of all nationalities may apply.
  • The main target group is established academics with an international reputation.
  • The Department of Political and Social Sciences also considers exceptional early-career scientists.
  • Former EUI professors or fellows become eligible after three years have elapsed since their last EUI contract.
  • Applicants should have good knowledge of English and any other language relevant to the proposed research.
  • Fellows must live in Florence throughout the fellowship and participate actively in their department’s academic activities.

Required documents

  • A short curriculum vitae of no more than five pages, covering education, professional experience, prizes and other major achievements, with a selected publication list, in PDF.
  • A two-to-four-page research proposal, in PDF.
  • A copy of an identity document such as a passport or national ID card, in JPG format.
  • Names and contact details of two referees whom EUI may contact later.

Reference letters are not requested at the initial application stage. Files should use standard international fonts and avoid macros, special characters and password protection.

EUI requires good English but does not list IELTS, TOEFL or another standardized English test for this call.

A committee of teaching staff from the relevant department selects candidates. The EUI Executive Committee gives final approval. The decision is final and there is no appeal.
