Oxford AfOx MBA Scholarship 2027–28: Full Fees + Living Grant

Oxford’s AfOx MBA Scholarship 2027–28 offers up to three awards covering full course fees and a living grant of at least £21,805. Eligible African applicants must submit their MBA application by 6 January 2027; no separate scholarship application is required.

Official Saïd Business School sources checked on 16 October 2026. The MBA application is open. Admission does not guarantee funding.

Who can apply for the Oxford AfOx MBA scholarship?

The scholarship page specifies African citizenship, ordinary residence in Africa, no previous master’s degree and a commitment to Africa’s development. The Mastercard Foundation–AfOx partnership supports Africans who have overcome hardship. Candidates must also satisfy MBA admission requirements.

Funding and deadline: what is confirmed?

The published package includes the fees and grant above, alongside tailored training, networking and support around the Oxford experience. It does not itemise every possible travel or family cost. Do not assume additional reimbursements without confirmation in an award offer.

The scholarship page gives a date, but does not state a cutoff hour or time zone. Check the application portal’s submission instructions and complete early. The MBA has a later March admission round, but that must not be mistaken for an extension of this award’s January cutoff.

MBA admission is a separate hurdle

The Oxford MBA is a one-year, full-time programme starting in September 2027. Its upcoming admission rounds include 4 November 2026 and 6 January 2027. The School seeks academic strength, professional maturity and leadership, rather than an application based only on financial need.

Applicant-fit interpretation: This route is best considered by someone with a clear business or organisational leadership goal. If your main objective is technical laboratory research, a research master’s or doctorate may be a better academic fit. Do not choose an MBA simply because a scholarship is available.

Documents and assessments to prepare

The current MBA requirements call for a recognised undergraduate qualification, at least two years of full-time work experience, academic transcripts, a one-page CV, GMAT or GRE results, two references, written work, an online assessment and English evidence where required. Non-English transcripts need official translations.

The supporting statement has a 500-word limit. Referees should use valid professional or institutional email addresses, not personal Gmail or Hotmail addresses. IELTS Academic, where used, requires 7.5 overall and 7.0 in each component; waiver and alternative-test rules must be checked individually. The School currently restricts TOEFL tests taken from 21 January 2026, so do not book a test without consulting its latest guidance.

Preparation advice: Ask referees whether they can describe a specific decision, achievement or difficult situation you handled. A detailed account from someone who knows your work is more useful than a prestigious name with little firsthand evidence. Ensure your CV, essays and referee accounts describe your role consistently.

How to apply

  1. Read the award’s eligibility conditions before paying for tests or an admission application.
  2. Compare your professional record with the MBA requirements and prepare missing evidence.
  3. Follow the official MBA application instructions to the School’s application portal.
  4. Complete the form, provide supporting records and arrange references. The School currently lists a £75 application fee.
  5. Allow time for the online assessment and submit a complete application within the scholarship deadline.
  6. Save confirmation and monitor the email account used for the application.

The School’s admissions process includes interview shortlisting and a final decision after interview. A course offer can carry conditions. If offered admission before funding is settled, clarify deposit and funding arrangements directly rather than assuming a scholarship has already been granted.

How to make a credible case

Scholarship eligibility is not a published scoring formula. The School does not provide an AfOx points table on the award page. For MBA written work, it highlights communication, analytical ability, leadership potential and community fit.

Our interpretation: Connect three things: a development challenge you understand, evidence of what you have already done, and the capability you need next. For example, explain a real operational problem you encountered, the action you personally took, and why stronger financial or organisational skills would help you improve the next decision.

Avoid turning hardship into a generic story of resilience. Where relevant, show the constraint, your response and the lesson, without inventing impact figures. Distinguish your own contribution from your team’s results. A realistic next step is more convincing than a promise to transform an entire continent immediately after graduation.

Frequently asked questions

Is admission the same as winning funding?

No. Keep your study budget and alternatives open until you receive a formal award decision.

Can I skip GMAT or GRE because I have work experience?

No. The MBA requirements say one of these test results must accompany the application regardless of previous experience or qualifications.

Can I rely on another Oxford scholarship guide?

Use it only for comparison. Each award has its own eligibility and application route; MBA, doctoral and other master’s funding are not interchangeable.
